Dalem Pakuningratan was built gradually from 1877 until 1921 in the era of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VII to be the residence of Prince Purboyo who is then appointed to be Sultan Hamengku Buwono VIII. There have been three restorations in Dalem Pakuningratan until now. First, in 1926, based on the order of Sultan Hamengku Buwono VII, the pendapa building was connected with pringgitan. Second, in 1928, built a back terrace called cekokan. Then in 1939, all the plaster floors were replaced with floortiles measured 20x20 cm with yellow and green motifs and also the door paint which was at first with gray colored replaced with green colored.

Now, the pendapa of Dalem Pakuningratan is used as the lecture room of ASDRAFI (Film and Drama Art Academy), the education institution which has born the famous directors, such as Teguh Karya and Slamet Raharjo.
